The company was founded by pioneering artist Maria Longworth Nichols Storer in a Queen City studio over 130 years ago, building the business and laying the foundation for what Rookwood is today — a world-renowned artisanal ceramics company, creating American-made, handcrafted ceramic pottery and tile. Known for its outstanding innovation in pottery, Rookwood began handcrafting ceramic tile in 1902, applying that same artisanship. With exquisite glazes, impeccable craftmanship and timeless innovation, Rookwood became a leader in artisan tile. Great acclaim grew after Rookwood artists designed several New York City Subway stations, leading to expansive opportunities in luxury hotels such as the Vanderbilt. In 1904, Rookwood received a Gold Medal at the St. Louis World’s Fair and soon after created innovative design techniques applied to high-end hotels, tiling rooms from floor to ceiling. In 2006, Rookwood launched its new tile collections of shapes, patterns and unique glaze colors, as well as tile designs created from original Rookwood molds.
