Electrometalúrgica Andina was originally founded in 1948 by Pechiney, a French Industrial Group. The following year the building of the factory and the first hydroelectric power plant began in San Juan. Two years later, the company produced its first calcium carbide, a basic raw material for acetylene gas production. In 1982 Argentine investors acquired the total share capital of the company and under the initiative of the new board a total of five production furnaces were operating by 1986. Increased operating capacity and substantial technological improvements led to product diversification. The company now was able to produce other alloys, such as calcium silicon, ferro-silicon, and silicon metal for the metallurgical industries. This gave the company the opportunity to expand and develop into foreign markets. Today it has some 300 customers in over 50 countries worldwide. After the Argentinian economic and currency crisis of 2001, Electrometalurgica Andina emerges strongly and in 2003 made the strategic acquisition of Carbide Industries Limited in the UK. This company being a processor of some 8,000 MT of calcium carbide per annum into the local metallurgical industry. During 2005 the acquisition was made in South Africa of the South African Calcium Carbide Company [www.sacarbide.com], the only calcium carbide producer on the continent, with a potential capacity of 90,000 MT of calcium carbide per annum.
